The association was established as a result of a
series of conferences organized by a group of economists in the United
States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China on the
Asian economies and the 1997 Asian financial crisis. They all felt the
need for more forums for economists to share their research work with
others, to interact with other economists, to search for more research
opportunities and topics, to make policy recommendations, and to make
more friends.
The intention to establish this association was
publicly announced by Shin-ichi Fukuda, Chung Mo Koo, Jeff Chien-Fu Lin,
and Kar-yiu Wong in the closing session of the “Asian Crisis, V”
conference in Chuncheon, Korea on December 10, 2003.
The association was established with the following
mission:
·
to promote interactions among economists in the
Asia-Pacific region and in other parts of the world;
·
to encourage economic research in the region; and
·
to disseminate economic research results.
These are some of the conferences organized before:
- Asian crisis 1997: So far
six conferences had been held: "Asian
Crisis, I" in Seattle (December 1998), "Asian
Crisis, II" in Seattle (January 2000), "Asian
Crisis, III" in Tokyo (July 2001), "Asian
Crisis, IV" in Taipei (July 2002), "Asian
Crisis, V" in Chuncheon (Korea) (December 2003), and "Asian
Crisis, VI" in Tokyo (July 2004).
Some of the
members of the preparatory committee were co-organizers of these
conferences. You can also
